Organic tea: more natural, healthier, better

Çaykur began converting to organic farming as early as 2003. The company wants to use organic cultivation to secure the future of the Rize region and its inhabitants. Chemical and pesticide-free cultivation protects the soil and water while giving the tea a better, more flavour-intensive quality. What’s more, the global increase in demand for organic products means that exports can be expanded, thereby increasing the overall wealth of the region. 

Today, Çaykur works with more than 10,000 organic farmers and produces organic tea on an area of more than 3,000 hectares. An additional 8,500 tea farmers, who have a total of 2,500 hectares of land at their disposal, are currently in the conversion phase. It normally takes about three years before the ground is completely free of traces. The company plans to convert its entire production to organic farming by 2023.

Çaykur supports farmers in converting from conventional to organic farming. Funds are provided to compensate for initial losses. The most important questions about the conversion process are summarised in a special brochure. The company covers the costs for the monitoring and certification of the farming process, provides information about organic fertilisers and guarantees 100% purchase of the organic tea cultivated by the farmers.

All Çaykur products made for export to Europe have carried the European organic Biosiegel label since 2009. Çaykur and its products are also currently undergoing the certification process for the EKOTAR seal.

The regional focus of organic production is the district of Hemşin. The tea factory there processes exclusively organically grown tea. Every day, 60 tonnes of organic tea pass through each individual processing stage. Two further organic factories are planned for the regional towns of Çamlıhemşin and İkizdere.
